APA style is all about the structuring, formatting and consistent order of your Essay. Essay Writing in APA Style will help your reader to focus on your content. Some students use automatic formatting tools to give proper structure to their easy and then make some necessary changes to it.

It will also be beneficial if you completely understand the standard structures, rules and regulations. So, if you are using APA style to write your Essay, then you need to formulate your content according to standards by following the detailed guidelines that we are discussing below:

1. Margins:

"Margins" is the border side or edge of your paper. You should maintain margins while writing an APA essay at at1-in. margins on all sides of a page, including left, right, top and bottom. You can automatically set this standard to all pages with a few commands in your Word document.

2. Line Spacing:

Consider line spacing between paragraphs and lines while designing your document according to APA style formatting. You can set this formatting in the Microsoft Word document. According to APA style, give double space to the Essay, including body paragraphs, quotations, title page, and bibliography. Always avoid adding blank lines and extra spacing to your content.

3.. Font Style:

Always use a legible font style for Essay Writing in APA Style. Your font should be easy to understand for your reader. In APA style, many Sans Serif fonts are used, including:

  • Calibri with 11pt
  • Arial with 11pt
  • Times News Roman with 12pt

These fonts are highly recommended to be used to consider the eligibility and readability concerns.

4. Paragraph Alignment & Indent

Always avoid full justification and align your body content with the left margin. Ignore the right margin as uneven content alignment. The Indent of the first line of each body paragraph should be 0.5 inches. In this way, you can format your APA essay in a consistent and readable manner.

5. Content Formatting

Your font style and size will be the same as you used on the title page. You have to write the main body section of your Essay in the normal text style. There is no need to bold and italicise any information while writing normal text.

Use bold and italics options when you want to highlight an important term and cite other authors' names in your content to give reference. Start your Essay Writing in APA Style with a level 1 heading after the title, putting it at the top. After that, proceed with your paper with heading level 2 and so on.

6. Title page Setup

There are two types of APA Style title page formats for students and professionals separately. These are different from one another. So let's discuss these both.

Standard Student Title Page Format

The standard student title page format includes the following:

  • Your APA essay title at the top
  • Name of student
  • Your course name and number
  • Your Professor name
  • Institute name
  • Essay submission data.

Professional Title Page Format

It includes:

  • Write the title of your paper at the flush right to the page number.
  • The title is on the left side of the paper with all capital letters.
  • Authors name
  • Name of department and institute
  • Authors note at the bottom

Line spacing

The title page should be double space. Write your title in three to four lines at the top of the page, and add a byline by adding some extra double-space and blanks below the title. After that, list all the title page elements without adding extra space or blanks.

Alignment

Your essay title should be aligned in the centre of your document paper. So, centralised all the information written on the title, excluding the page number. The page number should be aligned at the top-right side of the page.

Font Style

The font size and style of your title page are the same as the rest of the content of your essay font style and size. Just bold your title; there is no need to bold and italicise the rest of the title page information.

7. Page Number

Your page number should be at the top right side of your paper. Start to give the numbering of your easy file from the title page and give the page number 1 to the title page. Do not type page numbers manually, and use automatic page numbering options from the word-processing program.

The font size and style of the page number are the same as your paper content. Usually, there is no need to add an upper header in student paper unless you are guided and instructed by your professor.

8. Block Quotation Alignment

According to Walden University:

Block quotations are “Questions of 40 words or more are considered block quotations and are formatted differently than regular quotations.”

There is no need to pit any question mark around the block quotation. Start mentioning block quotation ½ inches after the quotation introduction. The introduction includes the auteur's name and date of submission of his or her work. There is no period to be out after the parenthetical citation.

9. In-Text Citations

When working on a research topic and Essay Writing in APA Style, you have to incorporate many citations into your text, known as In-text citations.

These citations help your reader to listen to multiple voices of different authors on the same topic. No matter which topic and subject you are working on, the APA citation in Essay makes it easy to cite other sources within your text. The in-text citations include information such as:

  • Author's last name
  • Page number
  • Year of publication.

There are different types of in-text citations that you can use in your text to give credit to other authors, such as:

  • Narrative Citation
  • Parenthetical citation
  • Combined parenthetical citation
  • Multiple narrative citation
  • Multi-author narrative citation
  • Combined multiple author parenthetical citation

10. Tables and figures

Tables and figures should be formatted separately according to APA 7th edition. While creating tables and figures, use the words “Table” OR “Figures” in bold with figure and table numbering. Write the table and image title on a separate line below this. Here, you can use italics and title case.

While making a table in your content, ensure that row and column labels are short. In the case of creating figures, make them simple and easy to understand for your reader. There is no need to decorate your diagram and figures, so use colour only where you need to differentiate one thing from the other.

11. Referencing Style

After completing your document, you should move to the next page of your Essay at the bottom. While using APA referencing formatting, follow the author-date method that you used in your content. As mentioned above, to cite other work, write the author's last name, page number and year of submission.

Kee-Man Chuah from the University of Malaysia Sarawak mentioned several refacing styles in his article published in 2021 that you can use in your content according to APA publications manually.
