Imagine being a child taken from your home in the middle of the night and placed in the foster care system. All you can take with you is what you can carry and the clothes on your back. What would you wear the next day? Or the day after that? Where would you get clothes for school? What happens if it rains, or snows, and you have no coat?
Hundreds of children in foster care in Sebastian County and the surrounding areas face this problem every year. Sometimes they cannot take their possessions with them when placed in foster care, and it may be awhile before they can get new clothes. How would you like to wear the same outfit for 2 days? 3 days? More? Could you do it? What would people say?
These kids don't have the luxury of being able to change their situation, or their clothes in some cases. The Little Black Dress Initiative seeks to bring attention to kids in foster care, and the work the Junior League of Fort Smith is doing to help them, by having members wear the same black dress every day for a week.
The Junior League of Fort Smith works with kids aging through the foster care system to provide support and educational opportunities they might not otherwise have, and to give support to other local organizations who work with kids in foster care. We do this in many ways: assisting the local emergency shelter by taking the kids living there on fun outings, taking girls from the Girls Shelter on a back to school shopping trip, providing foster parents with Christmas presents, assisting with an adoption picnic to pair potential adoptive parents with children available to be adopted, and so many more. We also work with transitional aged youth to teach them life skills classes in preparation for leaving foster care, and hold an "Independent City" event to teach them what it's like to live in the real, adult world. These are just some of the events JLFS works on every year to support kids in the foster care system. All the money raised through the Little Black Dress Initiative goes to the Junior League of Fort Smith to make these projects possible. Won't you help us help them by making a donation?
