More Info

Joe has been incarcerated for 42 years. In June 2022 his conviction was reversed and he was sent to the Cook County Jail for further proceedings. In September of 2023 Joe was diagnosed with liver cancer and was assured that treatment would begin shortly after that.  No meaningful treatment was given.  Thankfully on February 24, 2024, the appellate court released Joe.  During the time that he went untreated, his tumor doubled in size.  Unfortunately, joe is not alone.  Many jail detainees are languishing without meaningful care at the jail.  Gratefully Joe has been able to establish cancer care at UIC shortly after his release.  He is currently on home monitoring where all his movement must be approved in advance.

At the moment he is currently waiting on the approval/denial process to receive disability so he has no other sources of income.

He needs assistance commuting to numerous cancer related appointments at UIC and other area hospitals. He is hoping to fundraise enough for a car but in the mean time is reliant on Uber as well as family that must take time off work to take him to his appointments.

Currently, there is no cure for his liver cancer and he is on the waiting list to receive a liver, this could take well over a year.

While incarcerated Joe has been working with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project since 2011 and immediately reached out to support our work. Some of his work was featured at the 2018 The Long Term, exhibition at Washington Park Arts Incubator. He is a beloved community member of PNAP.

He has seeking live liver donors with A+ compatible blood types. His medicaid insurance covers himself and the donor. With liver transplants only a small piece of the liver is required from the donor. The liver is an amazing organ. The donors liver will regrow to normal size.  Anyone remotely interested can contact Joe and he can connect you with  his transplant doctor.    You  can contact Joe at: [email protected].

Thank you for your time and consideration in this urgent matter.
