Eastern Turkey and Syria were devastated by a series of earthquakes earlier this year. 7 months later there is still a massive need for the tens of thousands of people affected.
We fell in love with this part of the world during a 90-day visit to Turkey. We are returning to Hatay to volunteer and raise money for an organization called Mavi Kalem.
The primary issues they fight for in Turkey are gender equality and empowering disadvantaged children through health, education and community.
Mavi Kalem's work after the earthquake aligns with their broader efforts in the country. They continue to provide essential items for families living in temporary housing. This includes formula & diapers for infants, and feminine products for the women who continue to live in temporary housing.
But beyond that, they are also providing psychological support to children traumatized by losing loved ones and the trauma from living through such a catastrophe. Finally, they are also building safe study spaces for teenage girls whose college ambitions were derailed by the earthquakes.
