A Run with a Purpose

A Run with a Purpose

From Devin Quinn

On October 20th I am running the KC Marathon and realized I want to use my training for/running the marathon as a chance to help. So I chose to fundraise for Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City's The Children's SPOT.

I am currently in the midst of training for the 2018 Kansas City Marathon (my 1st). This has been a personal goal of many years. With injuries, lack of motivation, etc. it has been hard to find a drive. About 10 months ago I decided it was time to get serious and so I started dieting, running more, getting more sleep, in general: getting healthy. My initial goal was to run it in 2019, but I knew that would lead to complacency. So it had to be now.

Last week I struggled a lot to get my runs in: "too tired...no time...I'll do it this afternoon, I'll do it in the morning..." pretty much every excuse. I knew I needed to muster the will since this was such an important personal goal. And then it dawned on me: why not make it about something bigger than myself. And so, after spending quite a bit of time researching, I came upon Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City The Children's SPOT.

A part of Saint Luke's Foundation - Kansas City, the Children's SPOT (Speech, Physical, and Occupational Therapy) has served, "thousands of children with disabilities and developmental delays. We help children with speech, language, hearing, learning, or physical disabilities. The Children’s SPOT is a place where children with developmental challenges can succeed. We provide early and intensive rehabilitative therapy to infants and preschool-aged children, because that's when research shows treatment will do the most good."

Having worked in rehab for nearly a year now, I have come to understand some of the profound effects that therapy can have on an individual's life. After conversing with some who are involved in this incredible organization, and receiving their go-ahead, I am here to ask for your help. I will attach the link to the SPOT's main page, and I invite everyone to look through and read about the amazing work that is done there. Many of the children receiving therapy have limited insurance coverage for ongoing developmental therapy. Therefore, the program relies upon gifts from private donors and fundraising events such as this to help provide scholarship support to deserving families.

The goal I have set it $2,620 for the 26.2 miles in a marathon. My hope is to surpass this goal, but every penny counts! If you're not able to give monetarily, they are also in desperate need of other items as well:

So, I thank you all so much for taking the time to read this and ask that if you can, give to a worthy cause.
