Update #1

Last October I was a member of a Global Village trip to Taos, New Mexico.. The purpose of the trip was to help build an adobe brick house for the Romero family. I was able to meet Vera Romero and work alongside her family to help build the roof of her future home. Vera and her daughters currently live in a drafty old trailer and they are looking forward to owning a home where they don’t have to burn logs for heat.

I am writing to you because having a safe and decent home provides peace of mind that no individual should go without. I am asking for your support in funding my trip to Kalispell, Montana from October 9 - 16, 2016 to continue this mission. The cost of the trip is $1600, which includes a donation to Habitat for Humanity of Flathead Valley for the cost of building materials. While the Flathead Valley affiliate has a number of dedicated local volunteers, they depend on experienced volunteers who can devote an entire week of undivided attention to the project.

About Me

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet AbbyBy Pamela Nall

Like most people, Abby Bennett enjoys watching Drew and Jonathan Scott on The Property Brothers.  For Abby, The Property Brothers were a motivation to learn construction skills so she could be "handy" around the house.  What better way to learn construction skills than to volunteer with Habitat, which Abby did for the first time last September on our SuperStorm Sandy construction worksite.  Feeling exhilarated after a great day of volunteering and learning how to paint, Abby realized she had "the bug", the "volunteer bug" that is.  As she was looking through our social media sites to find out what other volunteer opportunities we had available, Abby discovered that there was an opening on Habitat Bergen's Global Village Trip to Taos, NM.  Even she couldn't believe how unexpected the situation was and she immediately applied, and within 24 hours Abby had filled the last spot on the 12 person volunteer team.  After an inspiring week of volunteering in Taos, NM Abby boarded her plane to come home.  Feeling fulfilled, grateful and humbled by her week of service, Abby sat down in her seat on the plane only to look up and find that The Property Brothers were on her flight!  Abby felt it was the affirmation she needed to confirm her choice to volunteer with Habitat was in fact the right one.

Abby is an advocate, sharing her volunteer stories with family and friends thereby teaching more people about the need for affordable housing.  She is one of the affiliate's most diverse and committed volunteers.  It's very possible you will find Abby at any one of our many events - gift wrapping, the 5k, shopping or dining at our community night partner events, the gala and securing gift card donations for special events.  She's part of the volunteer team that will be traveling to Flathead Valley, Montana this October to volunteer with their affiliate for the week.  Having someone like Abby be part of the Habitat Bergen family is priceless.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
