About Me

I'm an Interior Designer with a passion for designing and building just about anything. Homes, in particular, are a very personal space for people who live in them. In my career, I have the joy of meeting many families and becoming friends with all different ages and types of people. To be able to build a home for someone outside of my circle of life and make a positive change in their life is truly the reward and goal behind this trip. As I enter my 40th year of life on the day this trip starts, I seek to make my mark on this world. This trip would allow me to help build a structure that will not only provide shelter to people and hopefully withstand the test of time, but create a space where friends and family will gather to create memories and enjoy their time with each other or individually. That will be the most rewarding and satisfying birthday gift to myself; to know that I was able to make a mark and make a difference somewhere out there in the world (outside of the bubble that my friends and family live in). To be able to physically reach across the world and change someone's life is magical and amazing and I couldn’t be more excited about this journey that is to come with my team.

More Info

Within the Caribbean islands state of Trinidad and Tobago, substantial pockets of poverty exist. Home ownership for those in this economic state can be very hard or impossible to achieve. The rising cost of houses and land, unwillingness of financial institutions to lend, unstable employment, and lack of certificates of inherited land are all major obstacles for many families to get a decent place to live. Those who have managed to secure land often live in self-made, dilapidated homes of old wood and/or cinder blocks. Without the means to repair, improve or expand, families can find themselves in cramped, unsanitary, decaying structures that they call home.

Join Global Village in supporting Habitat for Humanity Trinidad and Tobago’s building program as we work to change lives and communities. Working in partnership with low-income families to build or repair safe and affordable houses helps to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness. The reality of meeting basic needs is easily possible once families have adequate living conditions. A place to clean clothes and keep them clean, safely store food, sleep well, meet necessary hygiene needs, build family relationships, and participate in the community all becomes possible with safe, affordable, decent homes.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
