Update #3

Skylar West, an Aviation Electronics Technician currently serving in the US Navy, visited home over the Thanksgiving holiday.

West, a 2017 graduate of New Glarus High School, enlisted in the Navy last year and went through basic training at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois, and Aviation Electrician training at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola in Florida. He is currently serving in the Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) at NAS Lemoore in Lemoore, CA.

During his two week visit home, his first since arriving in California, West attended the Wisconsin-Minnesota football game at Camp Randall Stadium, visited friends in Platteville, enjoyed Thanksgiving with his family, and attended a boys basketball game at New Glarus.

"I have seen tons of friends and family since I have been home. It was great to see everybody again!" West said.

To help with travel expenses home, the Ben Jackson Foundation presented him with a check for $500. The check was given by Larry Jackson and Tara Darnell on November 18. West received a Travel Award commitment in June of this year.

The Ben Jackson Foundation was founded to recognize newly enlisted men and women from Wisconsin who made the commitment to serve in military and to make sure they can visit home from wherever they are in the world. For more information, please visit http://www.benjacksonfoundation.org.

Ben Jackson Foundation

About 7 weeks before Airman First Class Ben Jackson, USAF, passed away, he surprised his family and friends with his first visit home in 14 months, and his first since arriving at his first permanent duty station – Misawa Air Base, Japan. Ben’s family and friends will always cherish memories of that visit.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, and as a “Thank You” to the young men and women that have chosen to enlist in the US Military, the Ben Jackson Foundation provides financial assistance to help these young people visit family and friends while serving at their first duty station, wherever that may be.

We owe a debt of gratitude to these young people, those who are not typically eligible for academic scholarships due to the path they have chosen. It is our hope that this small token of our appreciation and financial assistance will help make it possible for them to visit home.

Update #2

The Ben Jackson Memorial Fund gave out its first monetary award this past weekend to AS Trenton Eisch, US Navy, of New Glarus.

His family, supported by the generosity of the community, established a memorial fund to provide financial assistance to help young military service members visit home while on leave. The Jacksons also stress the importance of recognizing these young men and women for their service and sacrifice.

This past weekend, his parents, Larry and Jen Jackson, presented Trenton Eisch with a check for $500.

"We were excited to be able to present Trenton with the first check we've written, since he and Ben were so close in high school," said Jackson's parents. "Trenton wasn't able to make it home for Ben's funeral because his ship had been deployed since February. Today was a bittersweet day for us."

Eisch and Jackson both graduated from New Glarus High School in 2016. Eisch joined the Navy and is currently serving aboard the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) homeported in Mayport, Florida, as an Aviation Support Equipment Technician.
