Literacy: A gift that cannot be taken away

More than half of India’s women over the age of 15 have never learned to read. This can trap them in poverty and leave them helpless in many situations. Worse yet: if they can’t read words, they can’t read the Word.

This is why the Adventist Review and Hope for Humanity have committed to help more women in India become literate. The Adventist Review and Hope for Humanity are partnering with the Southern Asia Division Women’s Ministries Department to provide Bibles for literacy classes for women ages 15 to 85.

The results of literacy are dramatic. When women learn to read and write, they enjoy: better family health. greater awareness of social and legal rights. higher status in their families and communities. improved standard of living as more job opportunities open up to them. access to the Bible and the story of Jesus.

The last point is the most important: Because instructors use Bible-based textbooks, many of the students are coming to know and accept Jesus as their Savior. They are sharing what they learn with their families. And their lives are changed forever! The Adventist Review and Hope for Humanity are raising funds to give Bibles and carrying cases to every graduate in 2013. The cost for one Bible and its carrying case? Just $5.00! Literacy program leaders expect about 4,000 women to graduate in 2013. For every $5.00 you give, one more woman who has learned to read will receive her own Bible.

Please help the Review and Hope for Humanity give each of these 4,000 brave women the Book of Books.

Prayerfully consider making a gift to this special project.
