On Jan 22nd,  Dr. Joseph Clawson (Longview, Washington) was donating free surgeries in Ecuador, such as he has done every year for the past 34 years. A remarkable streak of service for over a thousand kids born with facial deformities. At the young age of 90, Joe was determined to compete yet another surgical mission.

Then, on the morning of screening clinic, he fell on a slippery floor in the hotel and broke his hip.

Joe continued to screen hours of patients that day from his wheelchair with no complaints. But near the end of the day, he confessed the pain was getting to him. We requested an x-ray and sure enough, a clean fracture was confirmed. In that screening clinic, we selected 27 patient surgeries to be donated by Joe’s team. We then put Joe on the surgery schedule as ‘patient #28!'

The total hip replacement surgery went well, but Joe is having a VERY slow recovery. The Clinica Nataly hospital staff in Loja, Ecuador has been wonderful, but critical post-op resources are thin and he has lost weight at an alarming rate.

We are kindly asking all of you to pitch in and make a financial donation and bring Joe home! Donations will help cover all medical costs and his flight. Joe’s daughters are in Ecuador with him now and doing everything they can to help coordinate his return to the U.S. Please send Joe your well-wishes and any donations are greatly appreciated.

** Drafted in the Vietnam Vet war, Joe is a retired Veteran, whose given his time and service to wounded soldiers with facial injuries, thus his foundations, Operation of Hope and JP Clawson Medical Missions, we’re formed in 1989.
