Buy-a-honeycomb

From Renee Alarid

Propolis (a graduate thesis) is an immersive environment. The environment is a life-sized hive that will project natural habitat and the difference between a healthy hive and a weak hive. It will help educate about bees.

Trying to figure out how the walkway would actually look...one honeycomb at a time!

More Info

Hello, my name is Reneé Alarid and I am in my last semester of the MFA - Creative Technologies program within Virginia Tech. I have always been interested in honey bees and thought that the subject of educating the user about how important these beautiful insects are to the ecosystem. Propolis is the title of my thesis, and what I would like to do is create an immersive environment to explore various creative technologies in order to educate audiences about the importance of honey bees.I am creating the partitions out of birchwood plywood. The birchwood is laser cut into hexagons. I hand glue the hexagons together to create shadow boxes. From there, I create modules that will hang onto a frame. There will be 6 partitions and when placed together, they will form one hexagon where people will be able to walk through, see projections of a hive and natural habitats. With all said and done, my hope is to have this be housed in a museum. So the structure has to be stable and the story will have to be told to educate humans of all ages.My defense of my thesis is on April 27th, the funds that I am seeking will help pay for the wood, the laser cutting, glue, hardware, speakers, and projectors. The hive will consist over 900 honeycombs and for each $20 raised, I will have dedicate a honeycomb with your name on it!
