Update #3

It is with a heavy heart that I announce this mission trip has been suspended. With much consideration, Habitat for Humanity has decided it Nepal May 2020 is not safe because of COVID-19. I am so thankful for all those that have supported and will continue to support future projects. Stay tuned. Please reach out directly with any questions.

About Me

The year 2020 is set to be a transformative year!  For me personally, I am moving into the 4decade of my life.  And on that 4 day in May, I will be participating in a week-long project with Habitat for Humanity (“H4H”) Global Village in Kavre, Nepal. I chose Nepal (1) to assist with disaster recovery stemming from the 2015 earthquake and 2017 floods; (2) I am drawn to the mountains; (3) learn more about the culture and deepen my understanding of ancient spiritual practices; and (4) to step outside my comfort zone by visiting a foreign country alone.

The 2015 earthquake in Nepal killed 9,000 people in Katmandu and left hundreds of thousands of individuals lost everything. Living in an earthquake zone myself, disaster recovery resonates with me. Hundreds of thousands face extreme poverty, and while thousands of California residents are also without homes, the remoteness of Nepal villages calls my attention. In the Bay Area, we are told we need to be prepared for 5 days without any government assistance. Imagine not days or weeks or years before anyone came to help you. By visiting and working alongside the Nepalese, I hope to send a message that they are not alone.

More Info

In the wake of the earthquakes in Nepal, we need to work together more than ever to provide pathways to permanence for the families affected. We invite you to join our team in partnering with disaster-affected families as they begin their recovery of their lives and livelihoods in their communities. Your donation will help Habitat build more permanent homes sooner.

Habitat’s Disaster Work in Nepal

Habitat for Humanity plans to help 20,000 families in cooperation with the government of Nepal and humanitarian agency partners. With the help of partners and volunteers, Habitat will remove rubble, distribute emergency shelter kits, and build transitional and permanent shelters.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

Update #1

Thank to my first donors who helped me reach 10% of my goal!

Why was the 2015 Nepal earthquake so destructive? At nine miles deep, the shallow initial quake caused a lot of shaking near the surface. Poorly constructed multi-story brick buildings and temples in and around Kathmandu were reduced to rubble. Brick is the go-to building material there because the Kathmandu Valley has many brick works. However, poor construction practices meant older buildings often lacked steel reinforcements and adequate foundations. Heavy bricks made the buildings deadly when they fell.
