Community Issued Badge to be sent to APD HQ in Austin, TX.
Diversity at the Austin Police Department should be a goal to strive for and celebrate when milestones are reached.
In anticipation and celebration of
soon becoming the interim chief of
as the first African-American female chief of Austin Police. This is a commemorative badge in the styling of Mrs. Robinson the first ever black female officer in the US and with a memorial of Tom Allen on the back, Austin Police's 2nd ever African-American officer who died in the line of duty.
Why is the badge $3,500? Celebrate Excellence is the contractor that has produced badges for APD in the past. When they are produced in volume they are far cheaper per unit. A special one time badge requires designing, dies, and proofs, not cheap unfortunately. Turn around time for a badge like this according to Celebrate Excellence is about two months.
Austin Police might have questions to answer if they used their general budget to pay for such an expensive badge so it has to be a privately led campaign. Any excess money will be donated to the Travis County Public Defenders office.
Feel free to call Celebrate Excellence 1-800-662-8283 to see if something can be worked out to bring the cost down, but understand this is a small business and new badges are not cheap.
If you are another badge manufacturer feel free to contact me if a better cost for a badge can be negotiated.
Once the badge is made it will be shipped directly to APD headquarters at 715 E 8th St, Austin, TX 78701 as a community issued badge.
