I am a first-generation Iranian American lawyer who was born to parents who fled their homeland. I wrote my legal thesis on the abuse that women and children endure in refugee camps and how the law does not protect them. Immediately out of law school, I quit the profession to experience what I wrote about at the grassroots level. (Watch my interview here).
My experiences include moving to Jordan to work with Syrian, Egyptian, Palestinian, Iraqi, and Jordanian survivors of honor killings, and co-facilitating curriculum for immigrant and refugee women near Washington, D.C. At present, I’m honored to serve the most recent wave of Afghan refugees at different bases across the United States.
Throughout the years I observed alarming gaps in the programming that is aimed to serve refugee populations. Many institutions focus on assimilating traumatized children to a new and unfamiliar environment in a one-size-fits-all approach. Creshendo aims to provide support differently. Creshendo, which literally means to reach the highest point of intensity, will focus on challenging obstacles that exist internally (due to social, cultural, familial, and economic barriers) and transform them into progressive actions externally. Creshendo’s uniqueness stems from its incorporation of socio, psycho, economic, and geographic-specific programming that is customized to each population it serves.
Another feature that makes Creshedo unique is its hyper-focus on representation. Creshedo will be comprised of people from diverse and relatable backgrounds so that children can develop mentorships with people who represent their identities.
To start, Creshedo needs funds for the following:
With your help, we can serve thousands of traumatized youth in a way that feels relatable and safe. I hope you join me in reshaping these children's lives to a brighter, more hopeful future.
