10% of my goal has been hit! Small Step for Me, Big Step for Guatemala.

More Info

My name is Maddeson Brown and I am a senior in the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. I have been give the incredible opportunity to participate in a community outreach program through the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and Common Hope organization in which I will travel to Guatemala during the week of April 27th-May 4th 2019. This trip will allow me to provide free dental care to those who do not have access to care or cannot afford it. We will be providing free dental care which includes cleanings, fluoride varnishes, oral hygiene instructions and restorative work. I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to give back and use my skills and training to improve the lives of these children and adults. The money raised through fundraising will be used to defray the cost of travel, housing, insurance, and meals while I participate in this very worthwhile outreach program and something that I love. I appreciate your support!

“Common Hope’s mission is to promote hope and opportunity in Guatemala, partnering with children, families, and communities who want to participate in a process of development to improve their lives through education, health care, housing.”

Update #1

My favorite thing about working with Common Hope is their commitment to help all of the Guatemalan people. According to Common Hope, more than half of the citizens livening in Guatemala are below the national poverty line. 25% live in extreme poverty earning less than 2$ a day. The country ranks 13th in the world for its level of income inequality. For Common Hope, while education is the goal, survival is the first priority. When we are here we will be bringing in our own portable dental units which include all equipment and instruments. I can’t wait to be in here in a few short months and help make a difference!
