About Me

I'm 66 years old and I have worked for over 30 years trying to build a community where young people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer can live a vibrant, positive life. I grew up watching as students were taunted as “being a fag”. I lived in fear every day that I would become the target of the bullying, the taunting, the harassment. Living in fear, repressing the fact that I was gay, resulted in my having a lot of depression. For the last 26 years I have had the privilege of working at Replacements, Ltd. where I have had the support of Bob Page & Dale Frederiksen, and for the last 18 years that of Andrew Spainhour. They are the ones who made my work possible by giving me the time, the flexibility and their support. For me, ANYTOWN is a beacon of hope that our young people, our future leaders, will be people who understand the value of diversity and the need to respect others, regardless of their differences. I taught at ANYTOWN for several years and have watched as those students graduated from high school, and collage and then started their careers. I am proud to have been a small part of many of their lives and to see the incredible things they are doing now.

About ANYTOWN

ANYTOWN is NCCJ's award-winning, week-long human relations summer program for young people. Not your typical summer camp, ANYTOWN provides Guilford County students with a unique opportunity to live and interact with a diverse group of students who come together to build a community based on inclusivity, respect, and understanding.

The full cost of sending one delegate (student) to ANYTOWN is $1,200. Thanks to the generosity of people like you, need-based financial aid is available to help delegates experience the magic of ANYTOWN. We need your help to ensure that Guilford County students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to participate in this transformative program.

About NCCJ

NCCJ of the Piedmont Triad is a human relations organization that promotes understanding and respect among all cultures, races and religions through advocacy, education and dialogue. NCCJ programs like ANYTOWN help to fulfill our mission by creating inclusive, respectful, and just communities.
