Give To End Homelessness

From Darren Hendricks

Serenity Village is dedicated to ending chronic homelessness in Arkansas and beyond. We plan to do this by creating a sustainable permanent supportive housing solution in a rural setting near Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

My name is Darren Hendricks. I and chairman and Director of Serenity Village.  Over the years I have personally had to deal with being homeless and I've also volunteered at a number of shelters.

Four years ago while volunteering at a shelter I noticed that we had a rising number of elderly coming in for meals but not spending the night. It turns out that the majority of them were, in fact, what is called chronically homeless. These are individuals with an underlying disability, be it physical, mental or substance abuse related who have been homeless for 12 consecutive months or 12 months over a 4 year span. Many of these poor people will die on the streets.

The idea behind Serenity Village is to create a permanent supportive housing community to end chronic homelessness in Arkansas. The plan calls for the village to include forty 170 square foot tiny homes with sleeping lofts as well as an additional forty 400 square foot single level homes for elderly or physically impaired residents.

The village will also include laundry facilities, community gardens, outdoor theater, day rooms, a medical clinic, convenience store, workshops and more, everything you would expect to find in your own community.

The village will be close enough in proximity to Pine Bluff for shopping, employment for those who are able, VA clinic and hospital. We plan to offer a daily shuttle service to our residents.
