Alex made news 20 years ago when the government sent federal drug agents and destroyed his crops and tried to send him to prison. The Oglala Sioux Tribe has sovereignty on their land and they passed an ordinance but the federal government overruled the ordinance. He never gave up and a federal judge has now lifted the injunction and charges against Alex. It is LEGAL for him to start all over as a farmer. Alex is a veteran and was stationed in Berlin, Germany. He was a Tribal Police officer and President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. His whole life has been helping people. His wife was key in the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipeline protests. She stated while at Standing Rock: If somebody wants to label me, I guess it would be water protector. She died from cancer this pass year. Alex's label would be: Perseverer because he continues in spite of counterinfluences, opposition, discouragement, hardship and tragedy.
This year has been very difficult but Alex will not be defeated. He wants to have a huge crop and get Oglalas back to work and improve lives. Unemployment soars over 85% on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and 97% of the people are below the poverty line. Many Oglalas have suffered and some lost their life due to Covid. Native Americans have been the hardest hit per capita by the virus. Hemp is used for bio-plastics, CBD, clothing, healing salves and many other products.
