Adam’s surgery is tomorrow morning and, thanks to all the donors, I am breathing a little easier and able to focus on him. That is such a gift. With donations received both on and off this site, we are more than halfway there. Humbled, optimistic and of so grateful

More Info

In a period of about 5 weeks, 3 things happened that plunged us into a terrifying financial situation. I found out, much to my dismay, that a retirement account I had counted on was actually an annuity and only available in monthly increments of $120 or annual payments of $5500. I was devastated that this money was not available to us in any useable way. I had a larger account we lived off that enabled me to be a stay-at-home mom for the first time, and planned to go back to work when it ran out, living on the smaller account until I found a job.

Shortly after that, we found out Adam needed surgery to repair a congenital condition he had in both knees.  The first knee was done in October of 2022.  The second is scheduled for Dec 15.  He was out of school for 6 weeks last year and non-weight bearing for 4 weeks.  I would not be able to work until he is able to care for himself.  I did apply for a few Christmas retail help positions but the fact that I would have to leave before Christmas week was likely my undoing.

Then I was notified Adam’s insurance plan was changed from one that had $30 co-pays for virtually everything, to one that requires 20% co-insurance…for virtually everything. I can’t even begin to think about the co-insurance for the surgery and the physical therapy to come.

If these things had happened, say, a year apart, they would still have been problematical, but could have been handled each on their own.  But they happened in such a short period of time, that everything collapsed.

I do get social security, but it falls short of covering mortgage and maintenance.  I have paid housing and utilities for December, but will not be able to do so for January. My goal amount would cover housing and utilities for 3 months.  No non-essentials are included. Bare bones time!

I’ve been struggling with the notion of asking for help,  I have been self-supporting since I was 22.  I am used to being the one who helps. Then I stumbled across this quote “Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it.” So this is me, taking a deep breath and being brave.  We need help.  As soon as Adam is recovered, I will start applying for jobs. In the meantime, I will monitor the market, do outreach and upgrade my skills so I am ready to hit the ground running. (If any of my NYC/NJ know of any available jobs or have any leads, please let me know! )

With help, I will be able to dig myself out of this.  And I will pay it forward. Thank you.
