Imagine being a 14-year-old girl, feeling overwhelmed by the weight of anxiety, self-doubt, and sadness, searching for a safe place where you can escape the pain and just breathe. You travel from placement to placement, places that are supposed to be therapeutic and helpful, only to leave with more mental damage due to unfair treatment, hostile environments, overworked staff, and under funded facilites.
Finally, after all of your trauma, you are relocated to a safe haven sitting on a ranch away from the hustle and bustle of the world, and are finally able to focus on what really matters- your treatment.
This is the reality we are aiming to create at Faith Enlightens Residential Group Home.
Let me tell you a little about our backstory- I am Faith Beasley, a recent Psychology graduate at Old Dominion University. While completing undergrad, I worked in both the group home and behavioral health facility settings. This experience helped me grow a love for mental health, and also showed me the dark side of the mental health care industry. I immediately saw the urgent need for truly therapeutic spaces for young women.
During my time as a mental health technician in a behavioral health center, I worked with adolescent girls who struggled with self-harming behaviors, suicidal ideation, anxiety, depression, bipolar, as well as many other diagnosis. Among all of the girls, I noticed they ALL shared a common issue- lack of self love. When I spoke to many of these girls 1-on-1, they shared feelings of unworthiness, issues with self-image, and dealt with insecurities stemming from their turbulent childhoods. These feelings of unworthiness showed up in behaviors like self harming, conduct issues, and mood disorders.
From then, I made it my mission to pour into those girls, and help them build their confidence. But there is only so much you can do while working in a broken system.
In 2023, I met with my partner, Taliah Muhammad, and expressed these concerns. Taliah has an extensive background in group home work, and working with at-risk youth. When speaking to her, she suggested the idea of a group home, tailored to give actual support and therapeutic environment to this growing population.
With her expertise and my vision, we came together to create policies and procedures for Faith Enlightens Residential Group Home- a facility featuring mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, an evidence-based treatment for anxiety and depression, and self love program, aimed to equip young women with crucial life and social skills while encouraging them to discover and cultivate their inherent self-worth and potential.
We have a vision- but we cannot do this alone. Please donate and help us bring vision to reality!
What We Need:
Having completed our policies and procedures for this program, this leads up to the next step of this process- securing housing. We are currently working with realtors to help us find a property but in order to move forward, we need proof of funds. The goal of this campaign is to reach $150,000. This will help us with:
Thank you in advance for all of your contributions. Our goal is to truly change the trajectory of these girls lives, and your help is much appreciated.
