The Mike & Sherry Project

Advisory Team: Sam Hellman-Mass of Suerte, Mike Shefman and Sherry Greenberg, Jerry Webberman of Jackson Walker LLP, Valerie Granoff, Kathleen Lucente of Red Fan Communications and Jaime Telfeyan and Doc Davis of Capital Area Counseling.

What: The Mike & Sherry Project works in partnership with Capital Area Counseling, a psychotherapy center providing affordable, accessible, high-quality mental health services to assist individuals working in the Austin restaurant and bar industry.

When: This project was started in March 2019.

Where: Austin, Texas

Why: Throughout his years as a restaurateur, Sam Hellman-Mass, owner of Austin-favorite Suerte, became increasingly aware of the need for mental health support in the restaurant community.

Sam was inspired by Austin foodies Mike Shefman and Sherry Greenberg. Mike and Sherry are staples in the local food scene and have become an integral and invested part of the restaurant community. With their spirit and compassion in mind, Sam and a diverse advisory team created the Mike & Sherry

Project to help fund mental health services by Capital Area Counseling specifically for those who work in Austin’s in the restaurant industry.

What’s Next: The Mike & Sherry Project aims to make a bigger impact in the Austin bar and restaurant community by creating a path to accessible mental health counseling for all. In addition, the project aims to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and remove the stigma surrounding seeking treatment. As we grow in Austin, we hope to build a model that other cities can emulate, providing accessible mental health services to bar and restaurant workers across the U.S.
