Despite being essential to our overall wellbeing, our community has a long-standing negative stigma surrounding mental health and therapy. The upcoming holiday season also plays a significant impact on the detriment of mental health.
The findings of a 2020 study from LifeWorks showed that 24% of people living with a mental illness found that the holidays made their symptoms “a lot worse,” and 40% of people living with a mental illness found that the holidays made their symptoms “somewhat worse.” These effects stem from feelings including but not limited to feeling financially stressed, loneliness, experiencing unreal expectations, remembering happier times in the past and comparing them with their present, and realizing they could not be with their loved ones.
This sad reality, while exaggerated during the holiday season, persists every day of the year. To tackle this and lean into our pillar of mental health, Impulse Group DC created a mental health fund four years ago. This fund seeks to continue breaking negative stigma by making mental health therapy more accessible to our community. Since its inception, we have assisted countless individuals by helping them pay the necessary co-pays that stem from seeking mental health therapy. 100% of the money from this fund will help those in need access these vital services.
