Update #1

Hello friends and family! I wanted to take the time to give you a little more information about my Thrivent Builds trip. You can also read more about Habitat for Humanity's work in Hawaii in the "More Info" section of my profile. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have about my trip or the organization itself. I would be happy to give you more details!

As some of you may know, Thrivent Financial (where I work) has a huge partnership with Habitat for Humanity through the Thrivent Builds program. Since I started working at Thrivent last year, I have become increasingly involved with this organization and am very passionate about the work that they do. There are so many people out there who can't afford decent housing - and I love that I am able to use my time to help make a difference in their lives.

In addition to the hundreds of Habitat for Humanity homes that Thrivent supports locally, each year my company also sponsors three Thrivent Builds Worldwide trips for corporate employees. After an application and interview process, I was fortunate enough to be selected as a participant on the trip to Hawaii this September. I feel very blessed that I have been given this amazing opportunity!

I will be traveling with a group of 18 Thrivent employees to Kona, Hawaii where we will spend a week building homes through Habitat for Humanity. We won’t know specifically what we will be working on until we get there, but I am looking forward to learning new things and working hard on the construction site. Through this trip I will also be able to experience the Hawaiian culture and get to know more of my coworkers (I have only briefly met the other trip participants – but I’m sure we will know each other very well by the end of the week!)

Hopefully you will consider making a donation to help offset the cost of my trip. Through this website I am trying to raise enough money to cover the land costs of my trip as well as make an extra donation to Habitat for Humanity. (The money raised here will not go towards the cost of my flight.) Feel free to make a donation through this website or donate directly to me – whichever is easier for you. Your support is greatly appreciated, and no donation amount is too small! Together we can help make a difference and put God’s love into action by building homes, communities, and hope. Thanks everyone!

About Me

Check out the blog section of this webpage for my details about my trip :) I had too much to say for the word limit on this page - so I had to post the details in another section. Hopefully this blog gives you an idea about what I will be doing - but feel free to ask me if you have any questions!

There are also more details about Habitat for Humanity's work in Hawaii in the sections below if you are interested.

God has blessed me in so many ways, and I am very grateful for this amazing opportunity to help those less fortunate through the Thrivent Builds program. Thanks for considering a donation to help support my trip!

More Info

Homelessness in Hawaii remains a reality for a considerable number of individuals and families. The number of homeless has been increasing at a rate of 6% per year. The median house price in West Hawaii is $275,000, which is not affordable to most of the local workforce. In the most rural areas, almost 20% of the dwellings listed by the Community Development Corporation consist of tents, yurts, lava tubes and cargo containers.

The mission of Habitat West Hawaii is to empower families and build community and hope through home ownership. Granted affiliation with Habitat for Humanity International in 2002, our small affiliate has just completed our 10th house. We are ramping up to increase our capacity – growing from building 3-4 homes per year to building 10 or more homes every year, and providing the support services to help our families become successful homeowners.

The Bartel/Greinert Thrivent Builds Worldwide Team will be traveling to Kona, Hawaii September 13 - 21 to help the Habitat West Hawaii affiliate construct a home.  The team consists of 18 Thrivent Financial corporate employees and field representatives.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
