Update #7

58 of our family members and friends raised $3295 for the Vietnam Habitat for Humanity Big Build project. This result is so exciting! Paul and I are very grateful for the support and just thrilled that so many people deemed this a worthy cause. We promise to do you proud while in Vietnam and bring back stories to share about the difference your contributions are making via Habitat projects. Wahoo!

About Me

This trip gives us the opportunity to combine two of our passions: travel and helping others.

We, along with 300 volunteers from around the world will join together in a Habitat for Humanity Big Build.  That means we'll build 30 homes in just one week!

We look forward to working alongside the Vietnamese community members and learning about their lives and their culture.

Please consider helping us with our fundraising goal.  The money raised goes toward our lodging and food during the trip, building materials the group will use during that week, as well as a donation to the H4H organization.

More Info

In recognition of the 10th anniversary of Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity and the strength and depth of the partnership, Thrivent Financial is honored to expand on its mission support of Habitat by sponsoring our team, as well as the entire U.S. contingency, at Habitat’s 2016 Vietnam Big Build.

While poverty has fallen in Vietnam in recent years, many ethnic minorities and those living in rural areas remain poor. Urban poverty is also a challenge, as towns and cities swell with the influx of people drawn by economic opportunities. Many homes in Vietnam were built informally and without adequate supporting infrastructure. About a quarter of the country’s housing stock is substandard or temporary.Habitat for Humanity Vietnam, established in 2001, specializes in the implementation of sustainable, community-based shelter and water and sanitation solutions. It has experience in rehabilitating and repairing properties damaged by the severe weather that frequently strikes the country’s long coastline. Habitat also works with microfinance networks so families can save and access credit for home improvements, a speedy way to help thousands of families improve their sanitation and housing.

Thrivent and Habitat

From the first nail to the last, building a home with Habitat for Humanity International is a profound experience for all involved. It’s not just sticks and blocks. It is tears and smiles, borne of hard work and faith. And it’s the knowledge that you’ve helped change lives.

That’s why Thrivent Financial works with Habitat. And it’s why we want to do more. Much more. Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity engages congregations, Thrivent chapters and members, Habitat affiliates, and individuals from across the United States and around the world to build hundreds of homes per year with families in need, provide mission trips for Christian outreach in local and foreign communities, and directly reduce poverty housing and homelessness around the world.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

Update #6

Our flights are booked! That's always an exciting milestone :) We depart MSP on Sept 29 and will land in Hanoi the next night. After spending the weekend in Hanoi getting to know the others on our team, we'll work at the build site Monday through Friday. After we're done with our Habitat work, we plan to travel in Southeast Asia for a couple of weeks, taking in Cambodia, Thailand, and a couple of days in Malaysia before departing from Kulala Lumpur. Can't wait!

Update #5

Here's the latest - we learned more about the work we'll be doing! We will be building with red brick - some days stacking it and some days even making it. We might also be doing some plaster work. These will both be new skills for me :)

Our small team will consist of people from MN, WI, OR, FL, NM, NC. Can't wait to meet them all!

Update #4

We learned some info about where we'll be and what we'll do! We'll be building homes in the Phu Tho province, which is in the north, not too far from Hanoi. Most of its population lives in rural areas; on average, people earn just $6 a month. The area is hit by many storms, and it's difficult for its poor residents to constantly repair their homes. Habitat serves the area by repairing/building homes as well as giving micro loans to better the province's water and sanitation.

Update #3

We've got things updated with the Habitat administrators so that both Paul and Kate can raise funds on this same webpage - much simpler! :)
