Magellan was diagnosed earlier this year with a rare blood disorder. Stem cell treatments are our only option to help save him but they will be around $5,000 each for 5 treatments.

Magellan had to go in for another transfusion today. This one is a little higher risk than usual to do blood shortages at vet clinics nationwide. They found a close match but there was a mild reaction when crossmatching his and the donor sample. He will be staying at the vet getting antibiotics, immunosuppressants and a very slow drip on the transfusion to make sure that he does not have a reaction and if he does they can stop treatment before any major problems occur. We were able to fund this transfusion with the donations received so far, and we so very much appreciate everyone's generosity.
As a side note, this blood shortage is nationwide, if you are comfortable doing so, ask your vet if they are in need of blood donors. Magellan's brother, Sioux, was able to donate blood and outside of being a little silly from the sedation, he had no side effects at all.
If you would like to send donations directly to avoid the fees that are charged through the site we have Venmo ( @Leslie-Mohme ) and a PayPal account for him as well here: https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8WG5HEthul
Magellan is going to need a step up in medications to try to fight this horrible disease. We will need to start him on Aranesp (darbopoetin) at a cost of about $500.00 a week. Darbopoetin is a hormone to help stimulate red blood cell production.
Our other course of treatment is to attempt stem cell transfusions. Unfortunately with Aplastic Anemia, Magellan will need multiple transfusions to try to reset his immune system at a cost of around $3750 just for the stem cells plus veterinary costs of $500-$1000 to administer the transfer.
If you would like to donate directly to the vet clinic in Magellan's name, please email me first ([email protected] with Magellan in the subject) and I can send you the information for the clinic where he is currently receiving treatments. He is seeing 4 different specialists so depending on where he is being treated at the time, i can give you their contact information.
In the case that we do not use all of the donations for Magellan, we will be donating them to VEG to help others who need help treating their pets in emergency situations. More information here: https://veterinaryemergencygroup.com/our-story/

Magellan has been feeling a lot better since his acupuncture appointment on Monday. He is eating all of his food and taking all of his medicines again. He just started his hormone therapy this week and we are keeping a close eye on him to make sure that he does not have any reactions.

Magellan was seen by his acupuncture vet today and she ramped up his treatment with Moxibustion during his session. Last week he had to have two transfusions and has started some very strong medications that are making his tummy a little upset so he was needing a little boost. This vet has been helping with things that Western medicine cannot help with and have been vital for helping keep him stable. He loves these sessions the most and really embraces the "spa" atmosphere. He falls asleep within seconds of the treatment starting and even looks around for her after she leaves.
