In 1913, the Great Reunion as it was referred too, brought together thousands of Civil War veterans for the 50th commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg. Among those aged veterans were 367 veterans from the State of Delaware.
For the 50th commemoration , each state designed special badges for the veterans to wear while attending the reunion. Delaware designed a badge as well for her veterans in the shape of a diamond as Delaware is known as the diamond state and within the medal is a Delaware Blue Hen and her three chicks, which was symbol the derived from fighting spirit of the 1st Delaware Regiment during the American Revolution and the three chicks representing Delaware's three counties. This particular proof that we are working to bring back to Delaware would have been run by the artist to test the final products quality before making the final badges that would of been proudly worn by Delaware's Veterans
Finding the original artist's proof for a Gettysburg reunion badge is a rare find and one for the State of Delaware is extremely rare find. This artifact may be one of a kind and we may never come across this opportunity again. No matter the size of the donation, please help us bring this artifact back to Delaware.
Once the Original Artist's Proof is acquired, the Delaware Civil War Society will be loaning the artifact to the Delaware Military Heritage and Education Foundation to be placed on display in the Civil War exhibit in the Delaware Military Museum.
