Hello, my name is Kaylee Holec.  I am 12 years old and a 6th grader at Merrill Middle School.  In Science class I am currently working on a project called 'Dollar Doing Good'.  In class I received a one dollar bill to use as a "seed" to go out and do as much good in the community as possible.

While my teacher was explaining this project I became very excited, as I immediately knew what I was going to do!  I'm hoping to raise money to donate to the ARL (Animal Rescue League).  I chose the ARL because they do so much good for the homeless animals in Iowa.  The ARL is very important to me because its where I got my dog, a pit bull named Gracie, and my four cats: Sadie, Patches, Piper, and Sox.

I also have 3 more dogs: Toby, Tiny, & Tinkerbell, 2 birds: Huey & Louie, an agama lizard named Leonard, a leopard gecko named Leona, 4 beta fish, and LOTS of other fish.  As you can see, I am an animal lover. :)

One of the many reasons I feel the ARL is very important is because of the way I got my dog Gracie.  We got her at a lake from a girl named Molly who works at the Animal Rescue League.  I was taking a walk with my family when we first met her.  Molly was walking Gracie and another dog.  We immediately loved Gracie.  So, Molly told us about herself, and how she works at the ARL, and how the two dogs she was walking were from the ARL.  While she was talking, she mentioned how the dogs were up for adoption, and we immediately knew we were going to adopt Gracie.  We adopted her a week later.  We had her for a long time until she started getting so attached to us, that she wasn't really being nice to strangers.  She just wanted to protect us.  Eventually, it got so out of control, that we unfortunately had to give her back to the ARL.  When she got to the ARL, she was not behaving at all.  She was very sad that she had to be torn away from her family.  And it got to out of hand, that they sadly had to put her down.  But now we know that she is in a better place.  And we appreciate the ARL taking care of her and trying their best to help her.  So that is why I want to donate the ARL, for all they have done. And a special shout out to Molly for trying her hardest to help and train Gracie.  We all love and miss Gracie.

~ Thank you, Kaylee Holec, Merrill middle school
