I have some exciting news! After several meetings with township leaders this summer it looks like we will finally have a tentative ground breaking sometime mid- September with construction to follow approximately 6 weeks!!

To fill you all in on the past 6 months; once we obtained the permit last winter the inter-governmental group that oversees the River's Edge Property has struggled to reach a quorum and therefore hasn't been able to make any formal recommendations that would move the project forward. (If you live in Middle Smithfield, Smithfield, Price, or Delaware Water Gap please ask to join Eastern Monroe Regional Park Commission) This snag means we have to default to the township where the property is located - Smithfield. They support the bike park however, they are in the midst of planning a very large commercial/residential property along the Marshall's creek exit. Volunteer Supervisors are putting in long hours in the permitting process for that project.

BACK TO OUR TIMELINE! ***Tentative****

1) Sometime next week a request for qualifications will be placed in the public notice of the paper asking for qualified contractors to build the park. This call will be open for 10 to 20 days.

2) Once qualifications have been submitted they will be screened by park leaders, and supervisors possibly from multiple townships and then once a decision is made it will be announced at a public meeting or work session.

3) Under the direction of the park developer; we will establish a more specific timetable for milestones

4) Once that time table is finalized we will be looking for volunteer groups to provide (tbd) something like 4 hours of service 2-6pm each Friday (just as an example)

5) My/our goal is to have the park completed no later than November 1st. this might change but it is close to becoming a reality. NOw is the time to get involved.

PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER OR PROVIDE IN-KIND SERVICES!!

Sincerely,

Scott Dietrich

About My Campaign

We are looking for personal sponsors and businesses that are ready to move the needle forward on making the Pocono’s a more healthy and vibrant place to live. I believe River’s Edge Bike Park has the potential to become a nationally recognized gateway trail that could attract thousands of bicycling visitors each year. This could be just the tip of the iceberg not only for improving healthy recreation locally but for unlocking a previously untapped economic engine of a trail-based economy that could bring an estimated $4-6 million dollars of tax free, soft-good revenue to our region.

Goal #1 - Combat Obesity: through the increase accessibility to safe, low impact cardiovasclar activity for all ages. OUR COUNTY RANKS - 31/67

Goal #2 - Encourage Physical Activity: allows for bike skill development, education and practice. OUR COUNTY RANKS - 26/67

Goal #3 – Increase Access to Safe Recreation: allows for bike skill development, education and practice for people of all ages in a park designed with gradually more difficult elements.  Also, by providing a bike park it reduces the threat of bike/ped & vehicular motor vehicle accidents. OUR COUNTY RANKS - 28/67

Goal #4 – Safe refuge from area roadways: allows for bike skill development, education and practice. OUR COUNTY RANKS - 54/67
