Steffany Lohn Sommers from Rancho Santa Margarita, California is the winner of the Debra Landwehr Engle Fellowship in creative writing. When she isn’t juggling her career as mental health counselor, Steffany is writing screenplays. Her new dramatic project, Rooms of Experience, caught the eye of the judges at the Cape Cod Story Summit and the patron of the fellowship, Debra Landwehr Engle.

Please help Steffany with her remaining tuition.

“I thought Rooms of Experience was captivating — a murder mystery that addresses autism and assisted suicide,” says Debra Landwehr Engle, an author, writing coach, as well as a mentor of the Story Summit. “The characters felt real to me, and I’m guessing this story will have an important message. From the beginning, Steffany creates a sense of dread in her storytelling. Nothing is what it seems, including a creepy helium tank that appears to have sinister overtones.”

Each season, Story Summits gather award-winning professionals from across the globe to provide intimate, meaningful and productive relationships with screenwriters and authors in an inspiring, immersive and naturally beautiful environment. Different than other writing retreats or conferences, the Story Summits help with building sustainable careers for writers. “Steffany is on the cusp of success with this script,” Debra Landwehr Engle continues. “I could see her coming out of the Summit with just the direction and guidance she needs to make it happen.”

“I am deeply appreciative for the Fellowship from Debra Engle, “ says Steffany. “Diversity, equity and inclusion are a big part of the work I do as a counselor, and part of my personal life as mother to a son with autism. In my writing, I continue those themes by creating roles for women, people over 40, and those with disabilities. I believe more roles like these need to exist and receiving this award will foster that growth.”

The Cape Cod Story Summit begins on October 11 and ends on October 17, 2020. It takes place at the Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, Massachsetts the height of “leaf peeping season.” The Ocean Edge Resort has been voted the best hotel on the Cape for the 4th year in a row by Boston Magazine.

Debra Landwehr Engle is the best-selling author of The Only Little Prayer You Need which includes a foreword by his Holiness, the Dalai Lama. Her latest book, a novel, Twenty, is available at bookstores everywhere and has been a number 1 best seller in its category on Amazon.

WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF STORY

We believe in imagination.

From the beginning, it was always the word. Through the unique ability to imagine and connect to one another through words, humankind stepped into greatness.

We know story changes lives.

Had it not been for Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, our hearts may never have known compassion for the poor.

We know story activates positive social change.

Had it not been for  Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, there may have never have been a civil rights movement.

We have watched story transform community.

Had it not been for Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, A Ghost Story, there may never have been the charitable component associated with the holiday.

We believe in encouraging the storyteller.

We need one another. Had Ernest Hemingway not encouraged J.D. Salinger, there may never have been The Catcher in the Rye

We are committed to helping storytellers find their audience.

The writer’s life can be lonely, so it is important to connect them with professionals who can support them in their storytelling and a lifetime of stories.

STORYTELLER FOUNDATION

We see people, not writers. We are inspired by their passion and their willingness to give themselves up for their story.

We see equal value in all writers. We are dedicated to improving the lives of every storyteller we work with.

We build partnerships around the world with like-minded dreamers interested in building a better tomorrow through the future of storytelling.

STORYTELLER MISSION

The Mission of the Storyteller Foundation is to elevate the human experience through stories that inspire and encourage.
