Every year, the traditional Ma'os Chittim - lit. "Money for Wheat" has been collected in each township to provide Matzah for all.

This tzedaka is a time-honoured tradition in the Jewish nation. This year, we are reaching out to a very special community that needs help bolstering its Jewish activities: Lusaka, Zambia.

Located just a two-hour flight north of Johannesburg, South Africa, Lusaka is a different world, both developmentally and socially. Whereas in SA there are very many Jews living together in solidarity with strong networks and support groups, the Lusaka community is isolated and scattered. Without a cohesive synagogue or structure, the Jewish way of life is far more inconvenient. It is not, however, impossible.

With the help of Ohad and his family, a fully Shomer-Shabbat family living in Lusaka, exactly one year and a half-ago (well before the first corona outbreak), my friend and I ventured out to Lusaka to help lead the community in their Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur prayers. We were received warmly and managed to daven with a sizable minyan by Ne'ilah (as well as the other tefillosand altogether had an amazing time. The community was very happy with the visit, and requested we stay longer and come back for Pesach!

The community in Lusaka, although small, is diverse. Long ago, there were more Jews living in a well-established Lusaka. Since then, most have emigrated. Still, there are few families that remain. On top of that, there are many Israelis that work in world-wide industries such as mining and construction in the country. Also, some Jews arrive in Zambia to volunteer humanitarian services such as infrastructure development, education, and other such causes. This means that we want to be able to reach every Jew at their level, so we are employing multi-lingual speakers to illuminate each according to their level. Geographically as well, there are Jews in far-out places that desire Matzah and connection on the special night of Pesach. Having more hands-on-deck means that we will be able to have a broader and more meaningful impact.

In the plans are:

- Matzah for every Yid in the country

 - printed haggados for use at the sedarim

-  Minyanim and Torah reading for all tefilos

- Pesach Seder for the community; as well as travelling to members in outlying areas!     - Torah classes during and surrounding the holiday of Pesach

- Installation of  mezuzos in Lusaka; stores, homes, offices, etc.  (Our goal is at least 10)

- Distribution of pairs of Tefillin to Jewish men in Lusaka (our goal is at least 3)

- Printing of Tanya in Lusaka; a famous campaign of the Rebbe with the goal of  purifying the air with the Holy Words of Tanya

And in general, to bring happiness and a warm connection to our Jewish brothers and sisters in the middle of Africa. Let them know that you care!
