If you didn’t notice, I’m raising money for my next book. This is unlike any book I’ve ever written-for so many reasons. First, it’s a story steeped in the voice of my great-great-great-grandfather who was born a slave and died a landowner in South Carolina. More than that it’s about strength and resilience. It’s about love and loss. Hope and finding home.

Join me on this journey to tell the untold story of Ervin James.

For a strong & resilient people

For our ancestors and children

For the cast aside

I've been working on this story for several months. One around resilience and strength, history, and legacy. It's centered around a man born a slave but who died with pride having creating a community for free blacks when that wasn't the thing to do in rural South Carolina.

Why

It’s not just a book. It’s a message to every person who has been othered, denied, cast aside. This book is for those who’ve looked in the mirror and wondered whether the promises spoken of their life are real. It’s for those who see their current reality and wonder if that is all there is. It’s for you if you know you are here because someone came before you with the audacity, strength, and resilience to keep going and survive in a world that didn’t want them. It’s not about the book. It’s about the people.

This story must be told, because it's not just African-American or Black history. It is American history. Our history. Our today is shaped by yesterday.

I’m looking for the 99

I need 99 people who believe Black history, Black voices, and Black stories matter to be the first to donate to my crowdfunding effort. I’m looking for those people who know that Black history is American history, intricately entwined in the fabric which is our nation. That this nation would not be what it is without the Black hands and hearts who have lived on and built this land.

Crowdfunding goals are to

  • Get 99 reviews on Amazon in the first month
  • Raise $4000 to properly publish and promote this important work
  • Spread the word so this book becomes a bestseller

What you get for supporting this story

  • Anyone who donates $15 or more will get a eBook copy when released (email address required)

  • Anyone who donates $40 or more will get an eBook copy and a paperback copy (email and mailing address required)

  • Anyone who donates $80 or more will get an eBook copy and a signed paperback copy (email and mailing address required).

  • All donors (up to 99) will be invited to attend a private Zoom book launch ahead of the public Live launch (email address required)

You can choose to give any amount you're comfortable with. The above are suggested giving levels with perks. Any donation amount is important and meaningful as the only way this book and story succeeds is with people who support it.

Thank you!
