Update #7

about 9 years ago

Dear donors! Today, my friend and fellow campaign donor, Aleks, delivered 50 Quikclot Gauze Pads (Z-Fold) to Volonterska Sotnya Ukraina-Svit in Kyiv (#5 on Euromaidan Press' "Verified way to help the Ukrainian army": http://euromaidanpress.com/2014/07/04/verified-ways-to-help-the-ukrainian-army/). Quikclot is also a haemostatic like Celox, but a different brand and preferred by some doctors in Ukraine. Given the increased fighting, it made sense to get a portion of these supplies to Ukraine ASAP.

I've also purchased 100 Celox Rapid Z-Gauze pads, which I've already received and will bring with me in mid-March when I go to Kyiv. To date, I've spent a little more than half of the total amount raised. Remaining funds will be used to purchase more gauze pads, CATs, and/or other medical supplies urgently needed. I am awaiting feedback from suppliers about product availability, and will be sure to update you on all purchases I make.

Thanks again for your support, and for saving lives!!! Slava Ukraini - Glory to Ukraine!!!!

More Info

When?

I'm returning to Ukraine in March, and will hand-deliver the supplies to volunteers, who will bring them to the guys fighting on the Eastern front. Picture updates throughout the process will be posted.

Why?

These items cannot be purchased in Ukraine. They are desperately needed, though, because many deaths can and could have been prevented if the blood loss had been stopped. In fact, blood loss from arterial bleeding is the leading cause of combat mortality, taking up to 85% of combat deaths.

As you can see from the video above, Ukraine's army is desperately underfunded and undersupplied; warm clothes, boots, generators, food, etc. - all can be purchased in Ukraine, but we in the West can provide them with U.S.-grade, top quality, effective, lifesaving medical supplies.

The Supplies

Celox Rapid Z-Folded Gauze - retail price ~$45-50.

  • The most effective haemostatic gauze, now approved for us by the US military Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC), the decision-making body for treatment of US military casualties;
  • Also chosen as the haemostatic agent of choice by the UK Ministry of Defense; in military use in Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, among others.
  • 0% re-bleed in US Navy test; 100% survival in US Navy testing (according to published data from the Afghanistan conflict);
  • Residual Celox is metabolized in the body.

Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T) - retail price ~$30

  • A soldier can literally bleed out in 5 minutes if the large artery is opened; a CAT can be put on with a single hand and compress the wounded blood vessels in 10-30 seconds
  • Awarded one of the "Top 10 Greatest Inventions" by the US Army

These items aren't cheap and by myself I can only buy a small amount - but with your help, we can save many more lives!!!!

I've already committed $500, but to stretch your dollar even further, I will be matching all donations by 10%. Any amount you can give will make a big difference --- no contribution is too small!

Also, all donations are tax-deductible since the funds will be directed to our family foundation, IKONA.

Tax-deductible donation information will be provided in your thank you receipt. Please save that for your records.

Thank you so much for your support!!!!!

Update #6

Today was a very sad, bloody day for Ukraine.

Via Euromaidanpr: "After 240 days of relentless defense of Donetsk Airport, it now seems it has fallen... http://ukraineatwar.blogspot.co.uk/

There are reports coming in that 37 defenders were killed today (via Vlad Sergeev, doctor of medic. detach. Nat. Guard): https://www.facebook.com/boroda.kiev/posts/850563241654200

Glory to the brave defenders that did not abandon their oath. May we live a life to honor your names."

Your generous support will save the lives of many heroes. Thank you, once again, for your donations.

Dear supporters!! Just a quick update to let you know that last week, we exceed the $5,000 goal and are now at $5,165!! This was possible because of your generosity - thank you, so very much!!

With the situation in Eastern Ukraine escalating once again --- this weekend at least 3 soldiers were killed and 66 wounded --- these supplies are even more vital and will need to be replenished...

There are just 12 days left in the campaign. When it's over, I'll be sure to send another update with the final amount collected. Please, feel free to share with family and friends who may be interested in donating before the end of the month. Thanks again, from the bottom of my heart!!
